History of the Oliver Fire Department
OLIVER FIRE DEPARTMENT HISTORY 1922 - 1983 BY V.R. CASORSO

INTRODUCTION
The Oliver Fire Department owes its success to the many dedicated men and women who have so unstintingly given their time, effort, and ability to make the department one of the most efficient departments in British Columbia. Since the inception of the department, its praises have been sung by all who have had reason to be in any way connected or associated with it. The feats of bravery, fire fighting, searches, rescues, life saving, etc, are retold by residents, travellers, and organizations in a grateful and respectful manner. Many lives have been saved and much property damage has been prevented. This did not happen by chance, it only came about by constant and persistent training on the part of the Chiefs, Officers, and men.

Oliver Fire Department
I write this with feeling as it has been my privilege to serve alongside these men for some 15 years, which helped in the research of the many tributes that have been recorded since the 1920's. During the course of interviews, observations, and reading recorded writings, the equipment and conditions were not always the best but were the best that could be afforded at the time. The community leaders and their supporters are to be commended for their long range views and the help they gave. Prior to the Incorporation of the Village of Oliver in 1945, finances were raised by donations, door to door canvas for subscriptions, dances, public functions, businesses were levied $1.00 to $5.00 and dwellings $1.00, which according to the Board of Trade minutes, were always cheerfully paid. For posterity, I have taken extracts from the Board of Trade minutes of all transactions affecting the Fire Department from 1922 to 1949, which will be left with the museum for the scrutiny of anyone who cares to review them. Due to the lack of written records, many things are yet to be written, however this is a start and as more data becomes available, it can be added.

I would like to congratulate and thank the firemen and citizens who contributed to this booklet and made it possible.

If anyone has any additional information of finds any errors or omissions, please let me know so that these can be corrected. I apologize for any errors or oversights that I may have made.
